Greencell Technologies – The Issues

For years scientists have been experimenting with bacteria in an effort to solve the dual problems of global warming and renewable energy, a result of the use of fossil fuels, and the need to develop alternative fuel supplies.

Algae in their many forms already produce up to 80% of the world’s oxygen through the process of sequestration of CO2 from the atmosphere. This is an established and well-known part of the eco-system. Concurrently, the biofuel community has always had the expectation that biofuels would one day play a significant role in our energy future. There has been much scientific research that leads in this direction. The major problems encountered, ones not hitherto overcome, are: to exploit the known science, vast tracts of land or sea have had to be employed; and the algae employed have typically simply died before the end of the process.

In summary, the processes employed to date have been wasteful in both resources and space, and inefficient.

GreenCell has invented and patented a process that overcomes these problems: the process is compact, efficient and measurable.


Greencell Technologies – The Science. Between 1978 and 1996, the US Department of Energy funded research into technologies that could have significant impacts on the consumption of fossil fuels. The focus of this research became the Aquatic Species Program, which investigated renewable fuel production (bio-diesel) from high-oil algae species, fed by the waste CO2 from coal-fired power plants. Researchers whittled down over 3,000 strains of micro-organisms into the most productive 300, and constructed 1000 sq. meter test ponds outside of Roswell, NM.

The ponds were set up as sort of algae ‘race-tracks’, where algae were circulated around shallow, oval-shaped ponds as carbon dioxide bubbled through the mixture. Results were successful and in some ways encouraging, but the program was abandoned after almost two decades, as a result of budget constraints and a preference for allocating resources to researching ethanol as a substitute for low cost fossil fuels.

GreenCell develops the GNUL Bio Processor
GreenCell Research Pty Ltd has now taken these ideas to the next level. Utilizing the intellectual property of Ian Wright, GreenCell Research Pty Ltd constructed a number of bio-processors at Yatala, Queensland to prove the concept. Scientists from the Atmospheric Research Facility at CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, provided advice on algae selection. To minimize the use of land and water resources, a proprietary bio-processor was created to grow the algae. Invoplas Pty Ltd, a plastics R & D company, built the processors.

The final bio-processor has been named the GNUL - “lung” in reverse - breathing in CO2 and breathing out O2.

Greencell Technologies – The GNUL Process

Emulating nature, algae are grown and are periodically harvested from the bio-processor; mature algae are dislodged and collected while immature algae cling to a membrane and continue to grow. Light is collected and distributed via vertical rods centred in the growth membranes.

Oil extracted from mature algae can be converted to biofuels using well-established technologies. Thus a double benefit is obtained from a virtuous circle: keeping CO2 from entering the atmosphere, and producing renewable products that will reduce the need for fossil fuels.
The GNUL bio-processors contain specially-selected species of micro-algae, suspended in water and nutrients; this provides for optimal growth. Fresh, salt, artesian or recycled water can be used in the process, as can poor quality water. A stream of gas is drawn from the exhaust stack by a blower and passed through the bioreactor where the algae, illuminated by synthetic sunlight, consume the CO2 component by photosynthesis.
Algae can also break down nitrogen and sulphur-oxide pollutants. To achieve this, the greater portion of the algae is periodically drawn off and put through a ‘dewatering’ process; this concentrates the algae so as to finally yield a solid algal cake, suitable for oil extraction and other processing. Most of the water (95%) is returned to the bio-processor.
The entire process has a very low energy requirement.

8 Unique Advantages of GreenCell’s Technology

A full-size plant built around a five layer stack of Bellows GNULs is expected to be capable of capturing 5 tonnes of CO2 per square metre of floor area each year.
The GreenCell GNULs use a two-stage process to maximise input and output: the first stage creates “sporadic water” in the Bellows GNULs and the second stage grows mature algae cells in the FlatPak GNULs.
A GreenCell GNUL plant, as a fully closed system, can operate continuously 24/7, unaffected by environmental conditions outside the plant.
The system used by GreenCell does not require prior scrubbing of nitrogen oxides from the input emissions.
The inexpensive nature of the materials used, the small land footprint, and the valuable by-products produced, mean that the installation of a GreenCell GNUL plant could be expected to pay for itself within a few years.
The carbon capture efficiency of the closed system is continuously and accurately measurable by gas content at the input and output points of the plant.
The GNUL lighting system can be tailored to individual algae species requirements.
In extreme environments, the GNUL system can be moved underground, unlike open carbon capture systems.

These technologies include the patented "GreenCell Clear" being launched in Europe, China and Australasia through local offices. A natural and safe L Plantarum Bacteria for use in organic waste management and freshwater treatment, this product is sold under an agreement with GreenCell in these regions.

Use of the GNUL in aquaculture should reduce the blooms of red and blue/green algae and improve the growing conditions considerably.
GNULS are manufactured from recycled, everyday plastics and are specialty moulded using our exclusive patented process.
The same carbon neutral manufacturing process produces very low cost water tanks and methane digesters, which are they, recyclable.
These are used as component and ancillary parts of the whole system.
However they are stand-alone items in themselves as they can be “blown” to previously unachievable dimensions.
Metering is via an EPA standard environmental gas analyser.

GreenCell Technologies GT5 Augments Sales Team Targeting North American Logistics Firms

(Aurora) – After concluding an extensive search across Canada, GreenCell Technologies Inc. (Frankfurt Open Market: GT5) proudly announced today that Bob Fitzgerald has been appointed manager of their expanding sales team and will join the Ontario-based producer of proprietary hydrogen injection fuel systems, branded HydroCell™ and HydroCell Max™, immediately.
Fitzgerald will be based at GreenCell’s head office in Aurora, alongside other executives and personnel.  He will oversee all channel sales and report directly to GreenCell CEO K. Allen Etherington, working closely with the recently appointed marketing manager, Ken Mair.

GT5 GreenCell Technologies: Hy-Drive Technologies Ltd. Seals Deal with GreenCell Tech

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ - Hy-Drive Technologies Ltd. ("Hy-Drive") (TSXV: HGS) today announced that it has just signed a significant Distributor Agreement with GreenCell Technologies Inc. (GT5:GR ) that will combine the strengths of both companies and allow for stronger positioning in the energy solutions market.

Mississauga based Hy-Drive has developed a hydrogen-based Alternate Energy Combustion Control System for transport trucks that has demonstrated impressive results and passed extensive SAE testing. In addition to this recent discovery the company has been conducting extensive lab tests to establish the most efficient electrolyte mixture and the optimal Anode to Cathode distance for maximum hydrogen production.
Both tests have led to modifications that not only increase the hydrogen output but also result in significantly reduced manufacturing costs.
Additional testing further to that conducted in November 2009, is currently underway from the 5th of January 2010 utilizing trucks installed with the Hydrocell running. The Electronic Control Data (ECD) will then be downloaded and used in direct comparison to vehicles running the same route under the same conditions which are not equipped with the HydroCell.
GreenCell Technologies is scheduled for an initial public offering (IPO) of their shares in February 2010. Renewable Energy; It’s Not Your Father’s Fossil Fuel
Renewable energy is a big player in this sector and offers a glimpse of what will soon be commonplace, based partly on trends and partly on government mandates. Cleaner burning fuels, greater mileage, efficient electrical networks and alternate means for powering vehicles are all at the center of the design and manufacturing that will be the central focus for generations to come.
Municipalities and public companies have slowly been adapting to renewable energy. In New River Valley in Virginia, the truck fleet owned by the Pepsi Bottling Group has added twenty-one hydrogen-injected trucks utilizing a fuel system produced by Dynamic Fuel Systems, Inc. a Canadian firm. The portable hydrogen generator that injects hydrogen into the engine’s intake increases mileage and reduces emissions.

Myriad Clean And Green Opportunities
The biggest benefactors of the green/clean tech trend will be manufacturers of electric hybrid vehicles, battery manufacturers, smart grid technology companies, green lighting technology, producers of wind power equipment and non-toxic cleaning products.
From 2002 to 2008, investment in greentech/cleantech grew to $15 billion. That does not include a massive commitment by world governments and major banks. Many countries, that adapted stimulus packages to climb out of the global economic malaise, included big greentech/cleantech spending as a priority area for research and job creation.

Reducing Emissions
A123 Systems Inc. (Symbol AONE.O), a maker of lithium-ion batteries and subsidized by the U.S. government, went public in September (2009) and immediately, the share price jumped 50%. This put the first-day performance of AONE.O solidly in second place for the year for most successful debuts.
The surprising level of interest in the company’s IPO prompted A123 to increase the number of shares available by 2.4 million. A123 System’s batteries power the growing electric car market, a sector that is seeing increased interest by investors.
The collapse of Lehman Bros had a chilling effect on the IPO market during 2009, but that may all change. An avalanche of attention is focused on renewable energy and clean technologies and that could lead to some interesting IPO possibilities.

Solar And Smart Grids
Silver Spring Networks is believed by many observers to be a potential IPO in 2010. Smart grid technology utilizes IT to manage the flow of power over a network. This is done by exchanging information between the provider and the customer. This system is fully automated and allows different devices, which make up the network, to talk to each other. Silver Spring Networks partnered with GE Energy to build a smart grid for a U.S. utility company. GE will provide smart meters for the project.
Rooftop solar panels can provide cheap renewable energy. Solyndra is a manufacturer of photovoltaic systems for the commercial rooftop market based in Freemont California. The company entered into an agreement with Milan, Italy-based Sun System. Solyndra also received $535 million from the Department of Energy in loan guarantees. In addition to the loan guarantees, the company has also received $600 million from investors.

Electric Auto IPO
There has been talk amongst those in the know that electric-car manufacturer, Tesla Motors could be considering an initial public offering. Although the company has denied the rumors, the move would be good timing for the well-funded firm. Tesla has managed to raise $783 million from some big-money investors and venture capital firms. Tesla announced profitability in July of 2009. As the large internal-combustion engine companies release new hybrid and electric models, the maker of the sleek Model S sedan would stir things up in 2010.

Greencell Technologies can now confirm that a Canadian transport company has agreed to test the Hydrocell on their fleet of vehicles. The class 8 vehicles have been equipped with the Hydrogen Enrichment System since September 2009. The Electronic Control Module (ECM) data that is being collected will be downloaded on November 16th, 2009 and the vehicles will then run without the Hydrocell until the end of November at which point the ECM data will again be downloaded and compared to the earlier results to establish fuel savings.
Following the results of this test the company will then enter into a dual emissions test where vehicles running with the Hydrocell will be compared to vehicles running without to establish emission reductions.
The final results are expected to concur with the tests conducted earlier in the year and will be released in advance of the company’s initial public offering (IPO) which is scheduled to take place in February 2010 on the Frankfurt Exchange in Germany.

GreenCellTechnologies: The Garnaut Climate Change Review - Diabolical Problem

A diabolical problem and a saving grace.Climate change is a diabolical policy problem. It is harder than any other issue of high importance that has come before our polity in living memory. Climate change presents a new kind of challenge. It is uncertain in its form and extent, rather than drawn in clear lines. It is insidious rather than (as yet) directly confrontational. It is long term rather than immediate, in both its impacts and its remedies. Any effective remedies lie beyond any act of national will, requiring international cooperation of unprecedented dimension and complexity. While an effective response to the challenge would play out over many decades, it must take shape and be put in place over the next few years. Without such action, if the mainstream science is broadly right, the Review’s assessment of likely growth in global greenhouse gas emissions in the absence of effective mitigation tells us that the risks of dangerous climate change, already significant, will soon have risen to dangerously high levels.

Observation of daily debate and media discussion in Australia and elsewhere suggests that this issue might be too hard for rational policy making. It is too complex. The special interests are too numerous, powerful and intense. The time frames within which effects become evident are too long, and the time frames within which action must be effected too short.
But there is a saving grace that may make all the difference. This is an issue in which a high proportion of Australians are deeply interested. A high proportion of Australians say that they are prepared to pay for mitigation in higher goods and services prices. Most of them say that they are prepared to pay even if Australia is acting independently of other countries. There is a much stronger base of support for reform and change on this issue than on any other big question of structural change in recent decades, including trade, tax and public business ownership reform. People in other countries, to varying degrees, seem to share Australians’ interest in and preparedness to take action on global warming.
Public attitudes in Australia and in other countries create the possibility of major reform on emissions reductions, despite the inherent difficulty of the policy problem.
This report aims to nurture the chance that Australia and the world will manage to develop a position that strikes a good balance between the costs of dangerous climate change and the costs of mitigation. It does this by examining approaches to mitigation in one country within a framework which, if followed elsewhere, would add up to a solution. The Review recognises that other approaches may also add up to a solution. If others were also to develop proposals that add up to a solution to the problem that would provide the basis for the type of realistic discussion across the international community that will be essential if a basis is to be found for effective global action.

The weight of scientific evidence tells us that Australians are facing risks of damaging climate change.


The risk can be substantially reduced by strong, effective and early action by all major economies. Australia will need to play its full proportionate part in global action. As one of the developed countries, its full part will be relatively large, and involve major early changes to established economic structure.

The work of the Review shows that the costs of Australia playing its proportionate part in an effective global effort, while considerable, are manageable. There is a path to Australia being a low-emissions economy by the middle of the 21st century, consistently with continuing strong growth in material living standards (chapters 11 and 23). By the end of the 21st century, and beyond, more so with each passing decade material living standards would be higher with than without mitigation of climate change.

GreenCell Technologies: Scientific opinion and dissent

There is no doubt about the position of most reputed specialists in climate science, in Australia and abroad, on the risks of climate change (Chapter 2). There is no doubt about the position of the leaders of the relevant science academies in all of the major countries.1 The outsider to climate science has no rational choice but to accept that, on a balance of probabilities, the mainstream science is right in pointing to high risks from unmitigated climate change.

There are nevertheless large uncertainties in the science. There is debate and recognition of limits to knowledge about the times and ways in which the risk will manifest itself. Every climate scientist has views on some issues that differ from the mainstream in detail.

There are prominent dissenters on this matter, gathered under the rubric of ‘sceptic’. For the most part ‘sceptic’ is a misnomer for their position, because these dissenters hold strongly to the belief that the mainstream science is wrong.

In a different category are a small number of climate scientists of professional repute who maintain that the mainstream science embodies misjudgments about quantities. These scientists, who accept the theory of the warming effects of higher concentrations of greenhouse gases, hold the view that these warming effects are relatively or even trivially small in comparison with many other causes of climate variations that are beyond the control of humans.

The dissent took a curious turn in Australia in 2008, with much prominence being given to assertions that the warming trend had ended over the last decade. This is a question that is amenable to statistical analysis, and we asked econometricians with expertise in analysis of time series to examine it. Their response—that the temperatures recorded in most of the last decade lie above the confidence level produced by any model that does not allow for a warming trend—is reported in Chapter 4 (Box 4.1).

GreenCell Technologies: The prisoner’s dilemma in international collective action

Effective international action is necessary if the risks of dangerous climate change are to be held to acceptable levels, but deeply problematic. International cooperation is essential for a solution to a global problem. However, such a solution requires the resolution of a genuine prisoner’s dilemma: each country benefits from a national point of view if it does less of the mitigation itself, and others do more. If all countries act on this basis, without forethought, communication and cooperation, there will be no resolution of the dilemma. Future generations will judge the outcome to have been insufficient and unsatisfactory.

Resolution of the prisoner’s dilemma requires communication, to find a division of costs and benefits of cooperation that is acceptable to all essential participants in a solution. The eventual solution can involve a range of cooperative arrangements, and not only matters related to the division of the mitigation task.
But resolution of the international prisoner’s dilemma will take time—possibly more time than we have. The world squandered the time that it did have in the 1990s to experiment with various approaches to mitigation.

Both bottled hydrogen and hydrogen produced by a research methanol steam reformer were used. These results were compared with results for all gasoline. A high-compression-ratio, 7. 4-liter (472-in. 3) d i s placement production engine was used. Apparent flame speed was-used to describe the differences in emissions and performance. Therefore, engine emissions and performance, including apparent flame speed and energy lost to the cooling system and the exhaust gas, were measured over a range of equivalence ratios for each fuel. The results were used to explain the advantages of adding hydrogen to gasoline as a method of extending the lean operating range. The minimum-energy-consumption equivalence ratio was extended to leaner conditions by adding hydrogen, although the minimum energy consumption did not change. All emission levels decreased at the leaner conditions. Also, adding hydrogen significantly increased flame speed over all equivalence ratios. Engine performance and emissions with hydrogen from the methanol reformer were about the same as those with bottled hydrogen.

GT5 GreenCell Technologies, Canada - INTRODUCTION . Increasing the efficiency of reciprocating engines has constantly been pursued since Otto-cycle engines were first used as vehicle powerplants. The important effects of fuel consumption on factors such as vehicle range, operating cost, and vehicle structures have always been important design considerations. During the past decade, the impact of environmental factors and a national interest in energy conservation have accentuated the need to produce clean and efficient engines. Many concepts for im
proving efficiency and meeting emissions standards have been tested and reported in the A review of the literature dealing with the problems of lean-mixture-ratio operation shows that a fuel with a low lean flammability limit and a high flame speed might yield low exhaust emissions at ultralean conditions. Hydrogen was identified in reference 5 as having those properties and has been the subject of much investigation. Using a small quantity, on a weight basis, of hydrogen as a supplement to gasoline was chosen as a way to extend lean engine operation. Onboard generation of hydrogen was selected as a feasible way to use hydrogen in a mobile application. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory I conducted a similar program (refs. 6 and 7) in which hydrogen generated by the partial oxidation of gasoline was used as a fuel supplement for lean engine operation. Various  commercial processes to generate hydrogen were analyzed for their applicability. The catalytic steam reformation of methyl alcohol (methanol) using engine exhaust heat was selected as being the most efficient process to generate hydrogen that was also compact enough to be carried on a vehicle. One disadvantage is that it would require a second fuel and a second fuel system.

A research system to generate hydrogen by methanol reformation was built and installed on a multicylinder engine in an existing engine test setup. An independent and parallel program on catalyst evaluation was performed but is not part of this report. An engine test program was conducted using gasoline and additions of gaseous hydrogen and reformed methanol to evaluate the effects of hydrogen-gasoline fuel mixtures on exhaust emissions, extension of lean engine operating limits, and fuel flammability limits and combustion flame speed.

GreenCell Technologies Inc. is pleased to announce the successful development and forthcoming release of a new product to complement its HydroCell™ unit.  Based on recent feedback from long-haul truckers, the GreenCell research team has now designed a wireless status indicator that will be manufactured and sold as a package in tandem with its popular Hydrogen Enrichment System.


The innovative device simply plugs into the cigarette lighter on the dashboard and instantly indicates the current status of the HydroCell™ and its present operating condition. The driver will instantly be aware if the HydroCell™ is in need of water and can rectify the condition which will minimize downtime. 

The HydroCell™ requires the addition of water every 40 - 50 hours of operation and will shut down and not generate Hydrogen if allowed to run dry. This device will ensure maximum fuel savings by eliminating downtime due to lack of water.  HydroCell™ has exceeded expectations and is typically doubling hydrogen output and increasing fuel efficiencies for transportation companies and independent drivers alike.

Hydrogen, as a fuel, is emission free and the only by-product of combustion is water.  It is the most abundant element in the universe and is the fuel of choice for the Space Shuttle’s main engine.

The HydroCell™ is an electrolysis-based on-demand Hydrogen generator designed specifically for the transport industry. The product draws a small amount of power from the vehicles electrical system and uses it to produce Hydrogen gas from a water-based solution. The HydroCell™ directs the produced Hydrogen gas to the intake of the vehicles engine where it acts as a catalyst during the normal combustion cycle. This creates more power and fewer emissions, burning only the existing fuel in the cylinder, resulting simply in less fuel being required to operate the vehicle.
